Our Mission
Sleepy Creek Tannery and Fur Dressing, is a premier tannery in the rural community of Wellsburg, Iowa. Hooked since he trapped his first coon at age 13, owner Ben Deters has spent over 20 years expertly trapping the ditches, streams, and sloughs in North Central Iowa. Year after year, his trap line grew longer and more productive, leading Ben to the realization that a future in fur handling awaited him.
After graduating high school, he pursued a conservation program at Ellsworth College, completing his studies in 2010. His next step took him to the Montana School of Commercial Tanning, where he earned his diploma in tanning techniques.
Following a summer volunteering at a hunting resort in Canada, Ben traveled to Ohio to visit Arlington Cape to enhance his skills through observation. In 2011, he took a significant leap and established Sleepy Creek Tannery, committing to purchase a building that would serve as his base of operations. Thus began the journey of one of the leading tanneries in Iowa, a story marked by passion and dedication.
